Battery Fire

No one is prepared for everything all the time, it’s just a fact of life.  Emergency may strike anytime, and place.  One of the best ways to be prepared is to learn as much as you can.  You can’t carry your bug out bag with you everywhere you go, but you can take your knowledge and know how.  So, while bug out bags and emergency preparedness kits and a must have, true knowledge is absolutely invaluable.  It’s always important to be able to make do with what you have, and today, we will be looking at how to do just that.

In an emergency situation, batteries can be a lifesaver.  They can be used in a flashlight, or radio, but did you also know they can be used to start a fire?

I recently came across a video on youtube showing someone using a single AA battery and a gum wrapper to start a fire.  Honestly, I had never heard of this before, so I decided to do a little more research into the matter, and much to my surprise it was completely true, and ridiculously simple.  This was such a fantastic survival hack, that I felt I needed to share it with all of you!

When disaster strikes, chances are you may not have a fire starter handy, but you may just have access to a piece of gum and a battery.  These are every day, common household items that can be found all over the place.

However, as far as I have been able to test, you need one of the metallic gum wrappers I.E. Big Five Gum.  The paper wrappers will not work.  Anyway, what you are going to do is take the gum wrapper, and trim it, making it so that the middle of the wrapper is thinner than the rest, this will be the area where the fire starts.  Next you are going to take each end of the paper and attach it to the each end of the batter.  Be prepared, as the fire will erupt almost immediately, and you don’t have long before it burns through the rest of the gum wrapper.

Please keep in mind, this may not be the safest of things to do, and it is intended for survival purposes only.  Don’t do this in your home or in a public place.  Basically, don’t be stupid.

If you need a tutorial, here is a fantastic video of this practice in effect.

Have you been able to try this first hand?  What are your thoughts?  Let us know what you think in the comments below!
